An authentic Cretan town with history

The birthplace of Pope Alexander V, Neapolis was once the capital of Lassithi, a role now taken by Aghios Nikolaos and is still a civic town of importance.

With its large open Square, Gardens, shops, tavernas, cafes, bars and weekly market the town is busy and thriving.   The largest church outside of Heraklion is here too and nearby two calm and peaceful monasteries.

New modern properties sit adjacent to older stone houses and there are some very interesting shops where you can buy anything from a hand made musical instrument to goat bells to a raki still!  Neapolis is home to the provincial courts, a hospital and all the utility companies.  Additionally there are museums and a cinema.

The buses going to and from Heraklion (from Sitia and Aghios Nikolaos) all stop here in the centre and there is a taxi rank.   One of the main roads to Lassithi Plateau also passes through here.

  1. Climate: Crete, in general, has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. If you enjoy warm weather and a Mediterranean climate, Neapoli could be appealing to you.
  2. Location and Surroundings: Being located in the Lasithi region, Neapoli offers beautiful natural surroundings, including mountains, valleys, and picturesque landscapes. The nearby coast also provides opportunities for beach visits and water activities.
  3. Community and Lifestyle: Neapoli is a small town, so if you prefer a close-knit community and a quieter lifestyle, it might suit your preferences. It offers a taste of traditional Cretan life and is known for its friendly locals.
  4. Amenities and Services: While it is not a large city, Neapoli does offer basic amenities and services such as shops, supermarkets, medical facilities, and educational institutions. For more specialized needs, you may need to travel to larger towns or cities.
  5. Access to Transportation: Neapoli is connected to other parts of Crete by a bus and road network, making it relatively accessible. However, if you prefer easy access to international airports or desire a bustling city life, you might find it lacking in those aspects.
