Mochlos – an almost exclusive holiday resort
Mochlos is a quiet and unspoiled fishing village 47 kms from Aghios Nikolaos and 26 kms from Sitia. In Minoan times it was an important port and 150 metres from the harbour lies a small island where excavations have turned up some very interesting and important finds. The island can be easily reached by a small boat and the archeological site visited.
The coastal village has a couple of shops, some excellent tavernas specializing in fish and a choice of accommodation. There are some small shingle/sand beaches and the water is ideal for snorkeling. The village is enhanced by the two small harbours and the surrounding area is generally rural with olive groves.
The village of Mochlos has become somewhat of an exclusive holiday “resort” and is very popular amongst foreigners and locals alike. Several villas and numerous new homes have recently been built.
Mochlos is perfect for those looking for peace and tranquility and who love the outdoors and sporting activities. Hiking, surfing, diving, snorkeling and fishing are the most popular.
The village’s marina is perfect for smaller boats and yachts and most residents have theirs anchored there.
For supplies and services, the towns of Ierapetra and Agios Nikolaos are about 25-30 minutes’ drive away.
Sitia and its airport are about 40 minutes away. Heraklion, 1 and a half hours away.
