A peaceful gem of a village!
Limnes is in a lush and fertile valley full of seasonal crops, vineyards, citrus trees, Pomegranate, almond and walnut trees as well as the ever present olive trees.
The village remains untouched by tourism and is very pleasant to wander around and admire the stone houses with their traditional Cretan architecture and Venetian and Turkish backgrounds. Many of the houses have courtyards bursting with colour or filling the air with the scent of lemon and orange tree blossom. There are red tiled roofs, chimney pots fashioned from ancient amphora pots and brightly coloured flowers tumbling over walls.
During the summer evenings, the village resounds with the laughter of children playing safely in the streets and conversations fill the air as people sit outside their houses chatting. Limnes has a supermarket, mini-markets selling basic provisions, cafeneions and tavernas. Mobile shops bring the rest and the town of Neapolis with all its facilities, including a regular bus service to Heraklion, hospital and a cinema, is a five minute drive away.
In Limnes there is a raki festival in the summer, which attracts locals and tourists alike to dance under the stars, feast and of course, drink the delicious local raki. Neighbouring villages also have summer fiestas.
The villagers are friendly and hospitable and by living or staying here one can experience real Cretan rural life, while being within easy reach of the seaside resorts of Aghios Nikolaos, Sissi and Milatos and the civic town of Neapolis.
