Hamezi is a very popular village for foreigners looking for a picturesque, traditional Cretan village.

A well-populated village, with a very interesting folklore museum, Hamezi is also picturesque, with cobbled lanes and pretty houses, many with flowers and well-kept courtyards.

Hamezi is also an important archaeological site, where archaeologists discovered a building from the Minoan period. The shape of the fortress-like building is oval, which makes it unique on Crete. It had two floors and a protected central courtyard inside. The building had a conduit and a moveable hearth.

Originally, it was a sanctuary, but new interpretations tend to agree that it was a kind of a fortress-like villa. From the windswept site of Hamezi there is a superb view of the valleys below and the city of Sitia in the distance.

It is a very popular village for foreigners looking for a picturesque, traditional Cretan village. Many have bought homes and renovated them with care. Most of the renovated houses have made sure to make the most of their terraces to take advantage of the panoramic views out to the valley and the sea beyond.

There is a local supply store for the basics as well as a kafenion and a restaurant.

Hamezi is located conveniently next to the highway that links Sitia to the rest of Crete, so residents can reach Sitia and the airport withing 5-8 minutes’ drive.
